SFA Global Media & Contemporary Culture Celebrates New Facilities with Ribbon Cutting and Reception

Celebrations were in order Wednesday, September 22 as the ribbon was cut by Communication & Contemporary Culture Division Director Dr. John Hendricks. The event was broadcast live on KTRE Lufkin/Nacogdoches channel 9. Guest alumni including Houston’s Channel 13 sports anchor Bob Allen as well as other alumni from around the state.

The day of activities included several guest lectures and a round table discussion of current media professionals.

Twelve SFA Global Media students traveled to Boston May 24-28, 2010 to Meet the Media as part of Dr. Linda Bond’s MCM 401 course. Access to the media was incredible; the businesses were fascinating; history was all around us. The course focused on students meeting global media leaders, learning about the latest trends in media and building connections for future job opportunities. GMCC Professors advancing use of New Media

Linda Bond and Dustin Lawhorn presented “Set in motion: Adding video to student work on Blackboard” at the Texas Blackboard Users Group state conference Oct. 16 in Nacogdoches. They showed how to incorporate new media online by using simple, inexpensive tools such as FlipVideo cameras. Bond and Lawhorn also demonstrated how blogs can become vlogs and websites can come alive even in the hands of inexperienced students. Bond showed how to use the FlipVideo cameras she got with a grant from the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs. Lawhorn discussed applications, opportunities and editing for the online classroom. The two are preparing their work for inclusion on the Texas Blackboard Users website.

GMCC Photography Students Bring Home Blue Ribbons

Several Global Media photography students brought home ribbons during the annual Nacogdoches Pineywoods Fair photo contest. The contest averages over 150 entries and includes amateur photographers from Nacogdoches and surrounding counties. SFA Global Media photography students were awarded 13 ribbons with Melanie Hairston capturing Best of Show runner-up.

Meet the Media in NYC

Fifteen Stephen F. Austin State University students explored the opportunities for internships and jobs in New York City as part of the Division of Communication and Contemporary Culture COM 401 MayMester 2009.

The course, taught by Dr. Linda Bond allows students interested in Global Media to explore various media outlets, networking, and gaining that hands-on experience.

Welcome Dr. John Hendricks

Dr. John Hendricks has accepted the position of Director of the Division of Communication and Contemporary Culture and will be joining Stephen F. Austin State University in mid-August. Dr. Hendricks has previous administrative experience as chair of the Department of Communication and Theater at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He currently serves as President of the Oklahoma Broadcast Education Association, a member of the Board of Directors of the Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters, and will soon join the Board of Directors of the Broadcast Education Association. Dr. Hendricks has an edited book on new media about to be published and is lead author on another forthcoming book.

I want to congratulate the search committee, chaired by Dr. Al Greule, for conducting a thorough national search and for landing a stellar new leader for the Division. Faculty comments made it clear that Dr. Hendricks was the preferred candidate and we are excited that he accepted the position. The Division is clearly headed for a great future.

I also wish to express my sincere thanks for the leadership provided by Dr. Ray Darville over the past two years. Dr. Darville did an amazing service in moving the programs through a transitional phase and we all benefited from his kind and generous personality. Dr. Darville will remain as interim chair through the remainder of the summer.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Hendricks to SFA.
